Corfu sea, castle in Kassiopi - a feast for the eyes

Corfu is so popular a holiday destination mainly because of its sea marvellous aquamarine waters. Aegean Sea surrounds the tiny island and is deeply rooted in corfu’s culture.

One of many villages situated along the seashore is Kassiopi, located in north-east part of the island. Main reason why this tiny village is so attractive for visitors are the ruins of a Venetian castle called “ Kassiopi castle and stunning seashore that is rocky, sharp and seems unfriendly what just adds it so needed charm.

The castle was located on a hill < a good observation point>. Nowadays it is surrounded with detached houses and a small forest so it is nearly impossible to spot it from a distance. Though it is worth to be seen. There is a possibilty to climb it and admire a stunning view of Kassiopi and the nearby villages scattered around.

In 13th century the castle was the most impressive mediaeval building in this region. The outer wall and ward reaching almost a kilometre in periphery, furnished with a few small towers can be seen today on the hill overlooking the village.

In 2007 renovative works began bringing the castle a breath of refreshment. They are aimed at profound restoring of the ruins so that more can be seen, noticed and understood while sightseeing.

Greeks moving to the USA needed to save memories of their motherland. Therefore having already founded a villade in NY they named it Corfu. This is a popular thing to do, all along USA, Canada or Australia we may find villades bearing names such as Venice, Warsaw or Cracow.

Studios Corfu - new type of accommodation

As numbers of tourists visiting Corfu each year grow higher and higher each year there are more and more possibilities of accommodation that are offered for them.

Studios offer tourists quality of a hotel mixed with privacy of a solo villa for a lower price. They are  perfect for families with children, there is a possibility to take your beloved pet with you as well. Visitors may dwell there as if they lived in their own flats, of course provided they negotiate terms with the owner. Here is a list of most popular ones:  Beis Beach, Filorian, Lena Mare, Dinas Paradise, Angelina, Amalia Complex.

Visitors often pay attention to Agios Nikolaos. As most villages of Korfu it was once a fishing village that evolved into a crowded tourist resort. It is stretched along the seashore on the slopes of several hills gently reaching for the sea. Those slopes and hills had their influence on the towns architecture. Streets are narrow, cobbled and winding. goiung for a stroll is highly recommended.  There is a legend saying that in the lake of Voulismeni Athene, the godess of wisdom used to take refreshing baths. not far away from here , on a seperate island till 50s there was the last leper colony all around the world: Spinalonga.

Corfu village- a perfect place for spending your holidays

The price of undisturbed peace.

Stunningly interesting and popular with tourists are becoming villas instead of hotels in Corfu. This may be due to increasing number of people who can afford hiring a villa whole for themselves as well as because annual onslaughts of tourists make it impossible to feel relaxed in hotels. Moreover villas are located in close proximity to civilisation as well as in remote spots that enable people to alienate from the outer world. Here is a list of most popular villas:

* Skidi beach villa: situated in Skidi (Korfu village of Skidi; south-western coast of Corfu)  it is located in a garden, beautifully manicured and providing an ideal place for relaxation. The view of the sea is uniterrupted which is specially appreciated when it comes down to admiring summer sunsets. This villa boasts its own swimming pool, equipped with sunloungers and a drink bar.

* Barbati: A villa in Barbati ( north-east part of the island) is a colorful combination of mountain and sea stretched along them. Spectacular beach, aqamarine sea with a steep slope of mount Pantokrator.
Specially appreciated by families with kids. Those who once have visited this place do not ever hesitate to come back.

* Beachfront villa (corfu village of Kanouli) A peaceful hideout boasting a seemingly eneverending  sandy beach with a bunchof tavernas serving local cusine. The lake houses many rare bird species and this area is surprisingly free of masses of tourists. Apart from the main Prasoudi beach, there are sandy ones  such as Skidi, Kanouli and Prasoudi that offer a quiet spot for sunbathing.

Undeniably choosing to accommodate yourself in a villa is far more expensive but the unarguable advanteges deliniated in the text explain why this form of spending holidays is becoming more and more popular.

Korfu - most popular tourist resorts

Situated in the northern part of the island Roda , once a small fishing village now Roda is a profoundly developed tourist resort with true variety of facilities available for visitors from all around the world. Unlike beaches of Korfu, that usually are either rocky, either gravelled the beach in Roda is sandy, only sometimes a bit rocky. It is undeniably perfect for families with kids as the atmosphere is peaceful and quiet. For tourists interested in night entertainment it is poossible to get to Acharavi that is a true partying centre of this part of Corfu. It is situated 3 km away from Roda.

Another, toally different resort is Kavos situated in southern part of the island. It is always buzzing with chatty twenty-somethings that go there to party till the first rays of sun appear from behind the horizon. There is plenty of possibilities to choose from : cosy cafes, inimitable Greek restaurants and whole lot of night clubs playing every popular genre of music to cater for tastes of all tourists that more oftten than not tend to be a bit fussy. Yet this place is unarguably deprived of true Greek spirit, everything is here made in a way as to please the tourist. No old-style authenticity. The southern tip of Corfu island tempts visitors with its five-kilometers-long wide, sandy beach. In close proximity to the pounding with night life town of Kavos there is Aghios Petros that provides a quieter alternative to lively Kavos: it provides perfect surroundings for older people or families with children.

Cheap corfu - maybe not in Sidari

The island of Corfu is mainly famous for tourist resorts offering a whole range of various attractions for people coming here every year.

Long coastline of the tiny island is full of picturesque small villages hidden among the hills and ringing the bays of the Aegean Sea. One of them is Sidari situated in the north west part of the island.Today the once tiny village is developing rapidly- more and more hotels, restaurants < although decidedly not cheap>seem to be mushrooming here and there all the time. Ovearall Sidari can host as many as 17 000 tourists. The village is situated 45 km away from Kerkyra- the biggest city of Corfu. Changes Sidari experienced throughout last twenty years are simply stunning. It evolved from a tine fishing village no one bothered to pay attention to a prosperous modern and fashionable town that lures thousands of tourists into spending their holidays there.

Why then is Sidari so popular among those hordes of tourists? well, undoubtedly owing to its being stretched along innumerable small bays that are ringed with rocky beaches of unrivalled beauty of The Aegean Sea. The landscape there is a true feast for the eyes. what needs to be pinpointed is that Sidari is nothing of a peaceful oasis offering relieving silence and peace. Due to its advanced infrastructure it is extremely popular with tourists. Local people constantly invent different ways of attracting possible visitors. As a result magicians or mimes out is the streets are definately not a rarity. Holidays in Sidari mean constant pleasure in discovering newer and newer places of entertainment :)

Beach - the promised land

Once a tourist alights from a plane the first thing that attracts his attention is the crystal clear navy blue sky that seems never to be shrouded with clouds. Weather in Corfu once in a blue moon lets down tourists that crave for sun. Location of the hotel found, luggage unpacked then it is high time to head for the beach.

Beaches in Corfu are varied. Probably the least interesting seems to be a beach in Gouvia. The town hosts the biggest yacht harbour on the island but the beach there is rocky, very narrow ( even like five meters). Seashore changes its character 2 km north from Gouvia- beaches there are covered with gravel, hidden in cypress groves. There are two towns called Dassia and Dafnila. The best capming site on the island is in Dassia. Farther towards north is Ipsos, but the beach there is always crowded, even though it is still gravelled. Barbati located on the slopes of Pantokrator, the highest Corfu’s mountain takes pride in a most beautiful beach in this part of the coast. In close proximity to Barbati there is Nissaki famous for many picturesque tiny bays. Yet a village most worth recommendation is without doubt Kouloura stretched along a clear bay surrounded by pine woods.

Along northern coast villages worth mentioning are: Kassiopi (one of the most fashinable tourist resorts nowadyas, yet also reknown in the past. The best example may be that caesar Tiberius had his villa there). The seashore becomes swampy further towards north-west. There is hidden the longest beach on Corfu: Almiros. Overall northern beaches are more peaceful and less crowded than those in the south. Peroulades and Acharavi boast such quiet spots to take a deep breath. In the region Sidari is now undergoing profound changes as the tourist infrastructure is developing very fast now.

Corfu - what to see in the capital?

Many people each year choose Corfu, Greece, to be their holiday destination. The island is situated between the very end of Italian Peninsula and Albanian coast but it belongs to Greece < periphery Ionian Islands>. Warm waters of Ionian Sea drag here tourists from all around the world. The island’s relief is varied: northern part of Korfu is mountainous, the central undulating, and the southern low-lying. Green cypress groves as well as those consisting of oil trees are common there. Corfu’s coastline is a bit varied, with slopes of hills ending up in clear sea waters and sandy beaches ringing small but so beautiful that nearly captivating bay’s. One of them is St. George’s bay in the northern part of the island.

This Greek island is more often than not chosen by affluent businessmen or other wealthy people to buy apartments, which is due to the mild climate of the island and the vastness of possibilities of how to spend time. The City of Corfu is full of outstanding monuments. Island’s history begins in 734 BC when the colony was founded < the metropolis was Korint>. Most valuable remains are exhibited in Archeologial Museum in Corfu for example a collection of ancient coins. Worth seeing is also a British Cemetary with beautifully carved gravestones. Interesting place to visit is also a museum of shells where most incredible and valuable shells from the Ionian Sea can be seen. Some less special objects are available to purchase.

Corfu- the chosen one ;)

The word ‘Corfu’ did ring the bell. Undoubtledy. It caused my heart to pound excitedly. Mainly due to the fact that i was tired. I felt just exhausted. I could not deny the fact that I was in a desperate need for a change of scene.

Completing my university degree in biology was the most demanding task I have ever attempted to handle. Months of ceaseless stress < whether or not my researches do present a scientific value> connected with that desire to do my best left me breathless. The only thing that could bring me back to life was to have the holidays of my life. That is : to reject the proposition of going to Greenland and spending there two months to have  a deep look into its summer fauna. I had to go there where all tourists go : a hot place, with an abundance of beaches and attractions. With no further consideration and hesitation i decided to go to Corfu : that legendary Greek island where the only thing i would have to bother would be the proper amount of sun-tan oil. Moreover the sea there is aquamarine, crystal clear and warm all year round.

And I have always dabbled in history. Where if not in Greece I would be given the chance to feel the spirit of ancient history?

Sandy beaches you’d better be ready to fulfil my expectations ;)
